So there I sit in the lobby of my hotel at the NAR convention and a little cutie starts chatting with me.  He was a young kid about 25 or 30 with a funky hairdo.  He casually mentions how tiring conventions are and how hard it is to network.  You see he is an account representative for a company that provides "unlimited sales leads".  Imagine that, leads that are *unlimited*.

Being the Twitterzilla that I am I asked what online social networks he belonged to.  To my shock and horror he said NONE.  I told him he was missing the boat.  Had he been involved with online social networks he would have known hundreds and maybe even thousands of consumers and future customers BEFORE he even got to the trade show.

Social networking is a waste of time, he said. This shocked me mostly because of his age.  So I looked at the youth and ignorance exuberance in the chair next to me and wondered how someone could be missing the train so badly.  I don't want to get the kid fired or the lead company pished off so I'm not mentioning their name.  I do wonder how they could have an online business but not be involved in online networking, not Twitter, not blogging, not Active Rain, not Linked-In.

The fact that this person and his company has no online reputation, interaction or network made me actually recoil.  All credibilty was instantly stripped away because they weren't rolling with the now.   He'll be the last guy advertising in the phone book yellow pages.

How fresh can their leads be if they aren't on the clue train, anyway?  They're probably still listening to eight track tapes in that company break room.

If you aren't networking socially online you might want to consider getting started.  You will eventually have customers, clients and referring agents who may not want to do business with you because you aren't grasping technology.  There, I said it.

If you're going to NAR in Orlando and maybe even if you aren't you'll want to hop on the bandwagon and follow along.

There are a couple of ways to take Twitter to the next level and get involved.  Even if you don't want to Twitter or you can't wrap your brain around Twitter you can follow the hash tags that people will be using.  The hash tag for the convention is #NAR2008.  Anyone posting a tweet about the convention can add that tag and it will organize tweets so you can read up on what's going on.

Have a Flickr.com account?  Take a lot of pictures?  Ever heard of Big Huge Labs?

Big Huge Labs lets you link to your Flickr images and create all sorts of nifty little gadgets, albums, trinkets and doo-dads to put on your sites, blogs, email or print for your own use.  I just created a really neat "Pocket Album" on big huge labs.  A pocket album is a regular size sheet of paper that will hold eight images of your choice.  Big Huge Labs will configure the photos so that when the page is folded and snipped in just the right spot it will be a mini photo album.  See how some of them are upside down?  See the faint gray dotted line to cut?  How cool is that?

The image can even be saved and emailed.

(Psst. drop a scanned business card or logo jpg in one of the spots  and pass them out instead of business cards)

The holidays are just around the corner.  How about mailing a pocket album of Thanksgiving festivities to the hostess that has you over as a "thank you"?  Maybe Christmas or New Years photos mailed to the Grandparents.

It's an inexpensive way to send somebody something that would probably mean more than a store purchased gift.

Realtors(r) how about an pocket album for that buyer's new home?  A neighborhood photo tour of their community?  The possibilities....
