Digged to Death

DigOk, what the heck is up with the Digg band wagon?

I've been Digged to death in the last 48 hours.  It seems everyone I know on Active Rain has been diggin' me.

What is it?  Do I NEED to do it?

I've been about Internetted to death with these networks so I haven't hopped on the Digg "digging" band wagon.  Does it have any benefits to "Digg" a person one knows?  Can someone break it down for me?

If you have any insights, please share.  Use small words so I understand, please.

Comments

Chris,

Can you please use smaller words to explain what 'Digg' MEANS? Thanks,   Fran

yes, what does this mean?

From what I know, it's a great thing that you're digged?  dug?  I don't know the appropriate term.  I'm eager to hear what others have to say about it as well.  It looks to be a blog bookmarking site, but when I looked at it, I really didn't get it...but I'm relatively new to blogging.

LOL at Fran.  (who I think is a funny, funny person)

Kathy & Christopher: Everyone is doing it - the digg thing. I just wonder if it has any importance.

Digg is the biggest social news site in the US. Basically if someone likes a post or an article on your blog or website they Digg (submit it and vote for it) it. If others see it and like it they will also Digg it. If you get enough Diggs (votes) you can move up to the top pages. Getting a front page story on Digg is huge because in many cases it can lead to thousands of unique and high quality back links to your site.

Just watch out and don't submit your own stories and avoid spamming lest your stories get buried instead of Dugg.

Chris:

I have wondered about this as well, and while I understood the general concept it was not clear. Thanks for bringing this up, and a special thanks to Mark P. for the clarification.

OH, and one thing to note is that REW was banned from Digg because their users were Digging far too many stories. It is a community focused site and if they determine that there is an effort to game the system the community will join together and bury every story from that source. This can lead to the source being banned completely. If AR members are seen as spamming Digg anything coming from AR will be considered SPAM and removed.

Ppl just dig you!!!

It was like a dam break...I am having the samething happening.  Just go 'Shout' at someone.

My question to Mark (if he's subscribed to this thread) is the email alerts that I'm getting, are they for blogs or just sort of like "friend" or "associate" alerts like Linked In and the similar.  I'm confused.

Mark-  I haven't actually started posting there yet, but I was specifically instructed to submit my own articles....?

My only digging is to sometimes read Jeff Turner's JustDugUp blog.  I let him dig for me.  Just lazy I guess.
Posted by Sarah Cooper (Real Estate Shows) over 4 years ago

Sandi, bad idea. It may be OK to do it on on very very rare occasions but it is generally frowned upon. If you are seen submitting and Digging your own stories you could get some push back. The power users there will crucify anyone who they believe is trying to game the system.

Chris, I assume you are talking about shouts from friends you have there. I can't say for sure though.

Posted by Mark Pilatowski (myClosingSPACE) over 4 years ago
I don't understand any of this...I'll just hang until I learn....to get digged sounds funny. Like my day talk. Like "I dig you" (meaning I really think you're groovy hahaha)

Posted by Mark Pilatowski (myClosingSPACE) over 4 years ago

Mark this is similar to the latest digg....after smarty Carney chimed in:

Hey there! XXXXXXXXXX is your latest fan. He became your fan because he likes what you are up to on Digg and wants to see what you think is interesting. You can either leave him as a fan or add him to your own list of friends. Check out his profile here:

For the record, I don't even know this person that "digg" me.  Dugg me.  whatever.

Posted by Chris Elizabeth Griffith ~ Bonita Springs Fl Real Estate (Downing-Frye Realty, Bonita Springs, FL) over 4 years ago
Mark-  Thanks for the insight!  Sometimes things change so fast it's hard to keep track of what is 'good', and what's 'frowned on.'

LOL and Mark is the person that just digg me.
Posted by Chris Elizabeth Griffith ~ Bonita Springs Fl Real Estate (Downing-Frye Realty, Bonita Springs, FL) over 4 years ago

Ahh. Yeah that is from someone "friending you". It might actually be me if you just received it. basically if someone likes the stories you are digging or commenting on they add you as a friend. That shows up as a fan on your end and you can either choose to be a mutual friend or not. You will see the stories or Diggs from your friends  and basically the more friends you have the more chances that someone will submit or vote for your stories.

Chris, you are probably right but if other Diggers from here know you are there they can look for you and add you as a friend. That's what I did.
Posted by Mark Pilatowski (myClosingSPACE) over 4 years ago

Chris,

I'm not really Digging all this Digg talk. Mark seems to have his diggees and the diggors all in a row. Do me a favor, when you get all this sorted out and Digg up enough info on Digging---Post script your post and inform us---We're all digging to know!!! Thanks,   Fran

Steve, I'm older than dirt and have been on this network a while.  I haven't even collected a lot of the "bonus" points awarded me for winning carnivals and blog contests.  I guess they're only bonus points if you throw a fit for 'em.

I'm glad you wrote this hot-diggity-dugg-it post......I was wondering just what the heck it was, too.  I asked a few people who 'dugg' me, and no one really knew for sure, just said to 'digg it' dag nab it.  So I did digg it but still trying to dig to the truth of digging it so it can be dug.

There have been a slew of those email notices!

I'm with you Chris.  I can't keep up.  The micro-second I learn one thing, there's something else coming down the road to learn.  It's too much.

And I'm over it.  I'm going to keep posting to Localism and hope that someone finds me and my "local" information who just happens to be looking for a Realtor.

I went over and looked at digg.com, I suppose if you need a lot of warm-fuzzies, a person would be happy to get listed.  How many websites can you live on?  To try to make a serious effort here and try to be serious about my RE website, that is about all I can handle.  At some point you need to have a life somewhere besides on a computer.
Posted by Dwight Wolfe (Emerald Coast Realty, Inc.) over 4 years ago
Dwight, Digg is not another site. It is a social news site. You basically want posts and articles on your RE website to get submitted and Dugg. You do not create a site for Digg. If you write a great story on your site someone may see it and submit it to Digg. If enough other people like it and Digg it you can move up to the front page and that is where the benefits are. If your site gets a front page story on Digg you get a lot of direct visitors (many sites servers can't handle this huge influx of traffic and crash or succumb to the Digg Effect) but the real benefit is the links you also get. Sure, you get a short lived link on Digg but you will also get thousands of really good backlinks from other sites that saw your story and either wrote about it and your site and linked to it or simply add a link to your site in their blog or site. I have never hit front page but those who I have spoken to about it have seen an average of over 1000 unique links coming from a front page story. Many links coming from very trusted and authoritative sites.
