You're a Realator Aren't You?

Realator, Realaty.

You've heard it, I've heard it.  The little extra syllable added in trademarked title or the word realty.

We occasionally hear someone say it wrong or see it misspelled in print.  Some have actually heard a REALTOR® say it.  How are consumers ever going to treat this industry with respect if it's very charges do not spell or pronounce the word correctly?

The word REALTOR® is a trademark of the National Association of REALTORs®. Which means it needs to have the registered trademark logo next to it at all times.

Should we ever get a spell check on Active Rain, I would like to suggest an automatic prompt for the correct spelling of REALTOR® and the registered logo ®.

Thanx A.R.  Is there an "Active Rain Suggestion Box" Group?

I first became aware of this when I was an office manager for a competing Realty firm.  You know before I got into the biz, I had thought that realator was the way it was to be pronounced.  I certainly learned differently on that first day!  Now it bugs me, too, when I hear it pronounced that way.  I hear it not only from the public, but also from the people in the industry.

  • I usually hear ..Real-a-turr  and it makes me even crazier when it comes from a Real-tors mouth!

This is a persistent and maybe hopeless problem. Thirty years ago my friend “Boomer” Jack Boardman was what was then called in Minnesota a “REALTOR® Associate,” and he tells me the campaign to correct the pronunciation of the name was already in place. Yet today, Jack’s bride Teresa, a REALTOR®, says often when she calls for a showing appointment, the phone is answered with: “XYZ Reality!” We codgers commented on this in our post: “Whine & Complain -1,” back in September.

A dear friend, who is a Realtor, didn't mince any words when telling me that I wouldn't get very far in trying to convince Realtors to use my staging services if I couldn't address them correctly.  She slowly enunciated the word and made me practice saying it over and over.  Thanks to her, I never mispronounced that word again, but, like others have mentioned, it does make me cringe when I hear others say Real-a-turr.

I love this post Chris!  When I was in Texas, I got Relator all the time.  Now up in Iowa, just every once in a while!  People can never seem to pronounce it correctly though!

I have trouble pronouncing the registered trademark symbol in conversation.

OK, 'late humor' from a title guy.

Chris,

I think that part of it is the local dialects.  I know how it is spelled, but I find myself throwing that stupid "a" in there when I am talking.  It is one of the words that I have to force myself to say by slowing down my speech.

If you want to talk about wrong pronounciations, here is one ammortization. I can't tell you how many times I have heard people say it "am-mer-ter-i-za-tion."  Let's just throw extra letters in there.

Anyway, it looks like you created the Suggestion Box group... so you answered your own question in that yes there is one. :)

Chris -

It is annoying - the mispronunciation drives my Broker nuts.

Correct me if I'm wrong (rare ;-) )  But don't you need a Ree-al-tur if someone wants to buy him a mo-bile?

I received a fax once from an agency which had entered their name into their fax machine as (fill in the blank) Reality! Truly, I thought it had to be some form of joke or scam.

So you are right, Chris: Realitors (just kidding) must set the example for all to follow ;)

What is a REALTOR®? Who is a REALTOR®?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

My husband always adds the extra syllable when he is talking about a less than stellar REALTOR® or when a REALTOR® is doing something stupid.

Yes, the incorrect pronunciation drives me crazy as well.

I really like the suggestion of adding spell check for all of the above mentioned reasons.  Does anyone know if that is a possiblity?possablity? or in the works for the future?

Like many of you, the mispronounciation of my chosen profession also drives me mad.  When ever I hear it coming from another REALTOR®, I'd like to ask them if they have considered seeing a Doc-a-turr about their speech impediment.

Like Sharon Simms, above, my spouse has a special term for stupid REALTORS® -- she calls them RealTards!

Chris, Realtor has become generic for real estate agent and the public does not know it is trademarked by NAR. But the pronounciation of the word should always be correct by those in the profession one would think.
